Press Release

Five schools within the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union as part of a partnership between the SVSU Health and Wellness Committee and the Alliance for Community Transformations in Bennington (ACT Bennington), the Town of Bennington, and the Vermont Department of Health. The signs, which are being installed by the Town of Bennington and the SVSU custodial staff, will publicly inform people of Vermont’s Smoke-Free Law - Act 135. The law prohibits smoking, including vaping, on all public school grounds.

The signs will be installed at Bennington Elementary School, Mount Anthony Union High School, Mount Anthony Union Middle School, and Monument Elementary School, as well as the Division Street Pre-Kindergarten location. Due to many of the school buildings being in such close proximity to public sidewalks, the installation of new no-smoking/vaping signs will be a positive addition to the SVSU healthy and safe school environments initiative.

A small unveiling of the new signs will take place at Bennington Elementary, near the Park Street entrance, February 14, 11AM. The event will feature brief remarks by ACT Bennington Director Dare Chammings, as well as a short presentation by members of the Mount Anthony Union Middle School Youth Leadership Team on the effects of smoking and vaping. There will be an opportunity for photographs after the presentation.
